The key Type 2+ limitation

Damage to the rental car is covered when it collides with another identifiable land vehicle. Damage caused by hitting a wall, gate, post, tree or another stationary object is outside this collision cover. It is also essential to record the other party’s plate number, driver details and photographs of the accident scene.

Responsibility for vehicle damage

Insurance reduces financial risk, but it does not remove all responsibility from the renter:

1

If the driver is found at fault and the car requires repairs, the refundable deposit will not be returned. The renter also pays for vehicle downtime at the rental rate stated in the agreement for the documented repair period, up to a maximum of 60 calendar days.

2

If the driver is found at fault and repair costs exceed the 200,000 ฿ insurance limit, the renter pays the documented difference between the insurance payment and the actual repair cost.

3

If the driver is not at fault, the renter is not charged for vehicle downtime or repair costs above the insurance limit.

4

If damage occurs without a collision with another party—for example, by hitting a wall, gate, post, tree or another obstacle—or if the incident was not promptly reported to Joy Journey and documented as an accident, minor body damage is charged at 5,000 ฿ for each separate panel that requires repainting.

5

In these cases, if a damaged part must be replaced, the renter pays the current official dealer price for the part plus 5,000 ฿ for painting and replacement work for each part.

6

If a tyre is punctured or otherwise damaged, the renter arranges and pays for the repair independently at any convenient tyre service. Do not continue driving on a flat tyre, as this may damage the tyre, wheel and suspension.

Separate body panels include, for example, a bumper, door, fender, hood, trunk lid and quarter panel.

The fixed per-panel charge applies only to the cases described in items 4–5. For a promptly reported and properly documented accident involving another party, responsibility is determined under the insurance terms and items 1–3.

How to find a tyre service on Google Maps

Open any of these searches and Google Maps will show nearby repair shops based on your location:

Breakdowns caused by the renter

The renter is responsible for a breakdown or damage caused by their actions or by violating the operating rules. This includes:

  • using the wrong fuel or adding unsuitable technical fluids;
  • continuing to drive after an overheating, low oil pressure or other critical warning;
  • driving on a flat tyre and damaging the tyre, wheel or suspension;
  • driving through deep water, off-road or on routes unsuitable for the vehicle;
  • overloading, unauthorised towing or using the vehicle for an unintended purpose;
  • ignoring an instruction to stop and contact Joy Journey after signs of a malfunction appear.

Conditions of insurance cover

  • Only drivers listed in the rental agreement may drive the car.
  • The driver must hold a valid licence of the correct category that is recognised in Thailand.
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or prohibited substances is not allowed.
  • Thai traffic rules and the rental agreement must be followed.
  • Joy Journey must be informed immediately about any incident.
